Working on draft

Thu Dec 2, 2004, 8:13 AM
The tale of Frankenstein, among other things, is a “birth myth” (Gilbert/Gubar 116), a metaphorical look at the horror and miracle that is birth and one scientist’s pursuit to achieve “godlike importance” (Martinez-Russ) in creating it (birth) by himself. This man’s name is Victor Frankenstein, a man described as an “interesting creature, wild and mad, yet gentle and so wise” (Shelley26). He is the one that, consumed by “one thought, one conception, one purpose” (Shelley47), will uncover “the secrets of heaven and hell” (Shelley 37). And in doing so, shall create the bane of his existence. It is this blight, his child that is a metaphor by Shelley of what giving life to a child is like, a curse until the end brought on by the offspring.
